Find your cowboy hat fit
A statement hat only works if you want to keep wearing it. Start with a measurement, not a guess based on the words “one size.”
Measure where the hat will sit
- Use a flexible tape measure. If you do not have one, use a non-stretch string and measure it against a ruler.
- Place it around your head at the intended hat position, generally above the ears and across the forehead. Keep it level.
- Keep the tape comfortably close without pulling it tight.
- Measure again to check the result, then note the circumference in centimeters.
Hair volume, hairstyles and personal preference can change how a hat feels. Measure with the hairstyle you expect to wear, rather than assuming an everyday measurement will work for every occasion.
Compare with the actual product
Look for the stated inner circumference or size range. If a listing gives only overall width and length, those are not enough to establish fit. A brim measurement does not tell you whether the crown will fit your head.
Check whether adjustment means an inner sizing band or an under-chin cord. They solve different problems: a cord may help keep a hat in place but does not automatically make the crown smaller.
If you fall between sizes
Follow the manufacturer’s sizing advice for the item. Do not assume that all decorative hats stretch or that a stiff mirrored crown can be reshaped like plain felt. If the fit information is incomplete, ask before ordering.
Check comfort before your event
When the hat arrives, try it on indoors with clean hands and without removing tags if the return policy requires them. Notice pressure at the forehead, movement when you turn your head and whether the brim interferes with glasses.
A heavier embellished hat may feel different from a lightweight fabric style. Fit and comfort are separate questions; neither is guaranteed by the phrase “one size fits most.”
How to read a hat size chart
Most hat sizes are a head circumference, shown in centimeters or inches. Adult size charts commonly run from roughly 54 cm to 62 cm (about 21.3 to 24.4 inches). To convert, divide centimeters by 2.54: a 58 cm head is about 22.8 inches. Always compare the same unit, and check whether a number on a product page is a head circumference or the outer dimensions of the hat. Outer dimensions such as length, width and height describe the hat itself, not the head it fits.
Child sizes are different
Children’s hats use smaller circumferences, often around 48 to 52 cm. An adult hat labelled “one size” can look right in a photo and still be too small or too large for you. If the circumference on a listing is below the adult range, treat it as a child size.
A simple fit check before you order
- Measure your head and write the number down in centimeters and inches.
- Find the circumference or size range on the product page.
- Check that your measurement falls inside that range, with a little room at the top if you plan to wear your hair up.
- If the page gives no head size, ask us through the contact page before you order.
We only publish measurements that come from the manufacturer’s listing or that we have measured ourselves, so a missing measurement means it has not been confirmed yet.
Fit and comfort on a long night
A hat that feels fine for five minutes can feel different after three hours. Weight, the width of the band and how the hat balances all affect comfort. A decorated hat is heavier than a plain fabric hat, so the way it sits on your head matters more at a concert or festival than it does for a quick photo.
- Try it at home first: wear it for 20 to 30 minutes while you do something else, and note any pressure points.
- Check the balance: a wide brim can tip forward or sideways if the crown is loose.
- Plan your hair: a high ponytail or bun changes where the hat sits, so test the look you plan to wear.
- Think about accessories: glasses, sunglasses and earrings can press against the hat or the brim.
Fit when you are buying for a group
Everyone in a group has a different head size, so do not order by guesswork. Ask each person to measure and send the number, then compare it with the size range on the product page. Our group hat guide explains how to plan colours, sizes and delivery dates for a bachelorette or group trip.
Returns if the hat does not fit
Unworn hats in their original packaging can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Keep the packaging until you are sure the fit is right. The shipping and returns policy has the full terms.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my usual cap size?
Use it only as a starting point. Measure your head and check the sizing for the particular hat.
Does a chin strap change the hat size?
Not necessarily. It helps retention, while the inner circumference determines how the crown sits.
Can I steam a mirror hat to make it fit?
Do not steam or heat it unless the manufacturer specifically recommends that method. Heat and moisture can affect adhesives and finishes.
What if my measurement is between two sizes?
Choose the size that gives you a little room rather than one that presses on your head, then check comfort at home. A tight hat is harder to wear for a full evening than a slightly loose one.
Is a larger head a problem for disco cowboy hats?
It can be, because decorated hats are not always made in many sizes. Compare your measurement with the listed range before you order, and contact us if the page does not state one.
How do I measure my head without a tape measure?
Wrap a piece of non-stretch string around your head, mark where it meets, and measure the string against a ruler.
